Geometries of Silence
ongoing project
"Geometries of Silence" is a project first initiated during an artist residency in Museu da Luz (Mourão, Portugal) in 2017.
Afterwards, I felt the need to continue investigating this growing body of work indefinitely and make it a project that will serve as an exploration of landscape, architecture, matter and the overall human need for control, organization and manipulation of its surroundings. There is no deadline for the completion of this project.

When one talks about luminosity it’s hard to understand the quality and nature of this so specific light from the Alentejo. The shadows here exerct a different role: that of refuge and act as a defensive barrier from the high temperatures.
Here the shadow is an essential ally for survival; a necessary shelter.
The strength of this light is visible in different ways: in the everyday objects, in the architecture, on the textures of materials and the skin, the way of dressing, speaking, the restraint of gestures and perhaps even in the way of thinking. There is a pulse in the way people look and an appeasing silence.
The landscape here is replete with simple shapes, configurations that vibrate with an ancestral force that goes beyond the physical.
This series of images was produced before, during and after the artistic residency that I did during the month of August 2017 in Aldeia da Luz, Mourão. It was here that these images gained roots and a solid body.
Curiously, during this period of residence in Aldeia da Luz I followed a routine very similar to that of its inhabitants, it obeyed to the imposition of natural circumstances: to wake up early, to go out to photograph until the peak of the heat, to return to shelter and then to leave again in the late afternoon when the temperatures drop and it is bearable to be exposed to the elements.
The light of the Alentejo has something of devastating and at the same time is of a profound calm. The images in this series bear this luminous intensity and the palpable roughness of this region.

Posteriormente, houve a necessidade de continuar a investigar e aprofundar este corpo de trabalho e torná-lo num projeto que funcione como uma exploração da paisagem, arquitetura, matéria e da necessidade geral de controle e ordenamento do território pela mão humana. Não existe um prazo definido para a conclusão deste projecto.

Quando se fala de luminosidade é difícil entender a qualidade e a natureza desta luz tão específica do Alentejo. As sombras aqui exercem outro papel: o do refúgio e barreira defensiva das altas temperaturas. Aqui, a sombra é um aliado essencial à sobrevivência; um abrigo necessário. A força desta luz é visível de diferentes maneiras: nos objectos do quotidiano, na arquitectura, nas texturas dos materiais e na pele, na forma de vestir, de falar, na contenção dos gestos e talvez até na maneira de pensar. Existe uma cadência no olhar e um apaziguamento com o silêncio. A paisagem aqui é repleta de formas simples, configurações que vibram com uma força ancestral que vai para além do físico. Esta série de imagens foi sendo produzida antes, durante e após a residência artística que fiz no mês de Agosto de 2017 na Aldeia da Luz, em Mourão. Foi aqui que estas imagens ganharam raízes e um corpo sólido. Curiosamente, durante este período de residência na Aldeia da Luz segui uma rotina muito similar à dos seus habitantes e que obedeceu à imposição de circunstâncias naturais: acordar cedo, sair para fotografar até ao pico do calor, regressar para abrigo e depois voltar a sair ao final da tarde quando as temperaturas descem e é suportável estar exposto aos elementos. A luz do Alentejo tem algo de devastador e, ao mesmo tempo, é de uma profunda calma. As imagens desta série estão carregadas desta intensidade luminosa e da aspereza palpável desta região.
